The Magic Millions yearling sales are ramping up on the Gold Coast right now and just in the first day alone, we have already seen some big purchases. We have already seen 3 young horses go for over 1 Million smackeroos with Zoustar x Members Joy filly going for $1.1M, A Sntizel x My Conquestadory filly going for $1.25M and an I Am Invincible x Mossfun colt going for $1.65M. We won’t get to see these potential future stars run around our tracks til late 2024/early 2025, so we decided to take a look back at those horses who were sold in 2021 and now have had a full season under their belt to mature. Which million-dollar horses for 2021 lived up to the hype and which ones flopped? Let’s take a look!
Basquiat – Purchased for $1.9 Million

This boy topped the sale with an eyewatering 1.9 Million Dollar price tag and was bought by Tom Magnier to be trained by Chris Waller. Granted, he is a Snitzel colt and they always go for a hefty price tag as Snitzel seems to be the be-all and end-all in breeding, but unfortunately, he didn’t work out for his owners. His only win came in a 4-horse maiden at Doomben, followed by a couple of placings, some in Group 3 level behind the likes of Kibou and Golden Mile, but he was never matching up to his counterparts who were sold for 8 times less than him. The pin was pulled to stop the bleeding after just $150,150 earnt from 10 starts and he was sold to a group of owners in Singapore for $290,000. He will continue his career in Asia.
Brereton – Purchased for $1 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-46.png)
This Zoustar colt was bought by a Victorian group of owners for a Million on the dot and was sent to Peter Moody to be trained. He hit the ground running with a close runner-up effort in the Debutant Stakes and then followed it up with a win in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate and things were looking very positive for the horse named after the famous mulleted Hawthorn Hawk Dermott Brereton. However, things have since stalled and he hasn’t been in the winner’s circle since. But, he is lightly raced with only 8 starts so far in the career and he is almost never far away in the run, he still has time to turn things around with $266,500 won in prizemoney so far.
Brosnan – Purchased for $1.05 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-47.png)
Purchased by Kitchwin Hills, this Snitzel colt finds himself in the camp of Ryan & Alexiou and much like most on this list, he has done very little to recoup his owners’ spending. He never looked like he was star calibre from the outset and he didn’t break his maiden until a win in a stock standard 2YO Handicap at Flemington. He hasn’t won since, but a close third in the Group 1 JJ Atkins helped him get his earnings up to $224,000. He doesn’t look likely to race much longer.
Custodian – Purchased for $1.15 Million

Not every James Harron purchase can be a winner, as this horse personifies. Went to Sale to get an easy Maiden win before being taken to play with the big boys in Melbourne. The Freedman camp gave him every chance to succeed and he could and the best he could manage was a 3rd in Listed company. He is now based in NSW under the Snowdens for one last roll of the dice, as he is lightly raced at only 5 starts. He has only meant a measly $46,000, so let’s hope things improve.
Diaco – Purchased for $1.5 Million
Who? You would be right to ask that, as this gelding has done nothing. Another Tom Magnier purchase for Chris Waller has lost a lot of money, as he has only earned $15,800 and is yet to break the maiden. Not even a gelding has helped him. Probably very close to retirement or being sold, unless he gets his act together. He has done so little, I can’t even find a photo.
Enviable – Purchased for $1 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-51.png)
Purchased by Annabel Neasham with hopes of finding her next star in this I Am Invincible colt, Enviable has gone on to do just about diddly squat. She could tell he wasn’t up to scratch so sent him to her QLD stable and place him in simple maiden races, not a group affair in sight. 6 starts and a gelding later, the maiden still hasn’t been broken and he has only earnt $15,000.
Flashing steel – Purchased for $1 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-52-edited.png)
Another purchase gone wrong for Annabel Neasham, but at least she is only the trainer and didn’t fork out her own money for this one. Things looked good early on with a narrow placing in Group 3 2YO race in the lead-up to the Golden Slipper, but things took a dip and the maiden wasn’t fully broken until recently with a win at Scone after a gelding. He has earned around $65,000.
Greece – Purchased for $1.2 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-50.png)
Ciaron Maher bought this I Am Invincible filly for a sale-topping price, as the most expensive filly of the class. In my opinion, this is the only horse on the list that genuinely has a chance to turn a profit for its owners. 3 Starts for a win, a 2nd and a completely forgivable 6th in a boggy Heavy 10 track. She is an exciting type that will most likely feature heavily throughout Autumn and Spring this year for the 3YO/4YO fillies and mares group races.
Man In the Mirror – Purchased for $1.8 Million

Oh boy Annabel Neasham really didn’t have any luck with her expensive purchases did she? But luckily for her, again, this one wasn’t a personal purchase, she was just chosen as the trainer. This 1.8 Million Dollar colt out of Not A Single Doubt started his career very positively, winning his debut and I actually blackbooked him with the line “Could be on for the Golden Slipper”, yeah, I was very wrong. He hasn’t won since, no matter how big of a grade drop he gets. He was sold in an online Magic Millions Sale in October for $135,000 to try and get some money back. He has earned just under $100,000.
Pyrois – Purchased for $1.2 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-54.png)
Bought by Spendthrift Australia, this colt out of Written Tycoon had a promising future, winning his second start to break the maiden. He hasn’t done anything else of note and has subsequently been moved from the Hawkes camp to Tony and Calvin McEvoy at Ballarat. He has earned $23,000 and is lightly raced, so he could still win more races, just probably not enough to make his pricetag back.
Schmeichel – Purchased for $1.1 Million
Tony Fung Investments was very busy at these sales with their 4th appearance on this list, unfortunately, this is yet another failure. Kacy Fogden trains and he has only earned 2K after 2 failed attempts at provincial maidens.
Spanish Empire – Purchased for $1.8 Million
![](https://themocksports.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-55.png)
Again, you might be asking yourself – Who? And you would be forgiven for not knowing this horse who was tied for the second most expensive purchase in the entire sale. This Kingman colt was purchased by Tom Magnier for Chris Waller is yet to go to the races and has been held off for a debut as a 3YO and there is nothing wrong with that. He has trialled twice recently and hasn’t shown a huge tonne of promise, but let’s hope he goes on to stardom.
So, this is where the million-dollar graduates of the 2021 class of Magic Millions have ended up! Let’s hope that a few of them are able to bounce back and start to live up to their price tags!
