We are only a couple of weeks away from the Autumn Carnival kicking off at Randwick with the Inglis Millenium. So, during this carnival, we will be looking to uncover plenty of value and grab some overs by playing the ever-mystical, always unpredictable Futures Market.
Whenever we see a price we like for a horse we think has the goods, we will jump on it and post about it in this weekly column!
Let’s crack on to the first one!
Dunkel – Australian Derby – $51 on TAB (PRE NOMS)

$51 Pre-Noms for this horse? Are you kidding me!? This boy out of the Patrick Payne yard has done little to no wrong so far in his short career being 5:4-1-0 so far. He has been racing so strongly and has a motor beyond his years, evidenced by his ability to get out of trouble and lift himself over the line no matter what weight he is carrying. All you have to do is watch his run on the 14th of January to see just how tough he is, and he was carrying 61kg. I feel as though he will eat up 2400M and the Derby’s are reportedly on his agenda. If he doesn’t nominate then we get money back, but if he does and he enters the Aussie Derby field, he won’t be, at least he shouldn’t be starting at $50s!
Empire of Japan – Inglis Sires Produce Stakes – $15 on BlueBet (Pre Noms)

This horse is my favourite of the entire 2YO class so far. He already seems to me like a horse that is prime for a 1400m-1600m run and could go on to be the top seed of the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas races in the Spring. But, a lot of water has to go under the bridge for that to happen, such as a stop at the Inglis Sires Produce and the Champagne Stakes. Even before that, he needs to get through the Golden Slipper unscathed.
I think he is a red hot go in the Slipper, but an even more red hot go in the Sires Produce. Pre Noms so if he doesn’t go there we get money back, but just look at the way he races, sits in a position at the tail with cover, waits for the straight, pop out and turn and burn past them all. He is the one for me and he will start in single digits if he does indeed race here.

Veecee – Blue Diamond – $10 on Sportsbet (All In)

Ozzie Kheir seems to have yet another smart colt on their hands with Veecee. Its debut run at Flemington a few weeks back was impressive without setting the clock on fire, but his times actually read better than The Instructor’s who is the field favourite at the moment.
Throw in the fact that both Don Corleone and King’s Gambit might not even be there, and if they are, only 1 of them will be, there is another opportunity for Veecee to shorten in the market. He also runs this weekend for what will most likely be his final tune up for the race and he is odds on favourite. If he wins, he shortens in the Blue Diamond market again. So the $10 pricetag won’t last, I am happy to have a tenner on.
That’s our 3 bets for this week, come back next week to see if we have found another edge on the futures market!
