First off – Happy New Year! Second off – wasn’t that the way to finish out 2023, nice and strong! 4 Winners and only one horse went unplaced all day, definitely some cash in the pocket for the New Years celebrations. Now, down to business. The new year means we reset, last year, let’s put it out of the mind. In full transparency, if you’d jumped on every tip, not a lot of profit would have been made if any. But I fully intend to turn that around and really get on a roll to start the year. So let’s crack in!
Track Report: The track was Good 4 midweek when acceptances occurred but there has been a bit of drizzle since. Expect anywhere from Good 4 – Soft 6 MAX I would think. The rail is out six metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder, so watch out for those leaders.
Race 1 – 1600M Tab Highway Hcp (C3)
I Am Good At This figures as a great chance here in the first Highway of the year. Raced quite flat last time at this level but has since proceeded to have two very strong runs in the Country to regain the confidence. Now that he has found winning form he can certainly go on with it. Gets Nash on his back and should be in the right part of the track to be winning.
Mazita was the horse I was on a couple of weeks ago and he ran pretty fairly to be fair of him, just got a bit stuck in traffic. If he wins here without me I will be slightly annoyed, I will admit. Just needs to get off the fence I feel from that inside barrier, as his tendency to get a bit back could have him shuffled all the way to the tail or boxed in coming down the straight.
Magic Pharoah was a winner last time out in the Highway and she has only been lumped with half a kilo because of it, which has her placed excellently here weight wise. She beat the favourite Mazita comfortably on that day, which shows she is more than capable of doing it again.
Arrabbiata is probably one of the better roughie chances here. Should be the one to inject pace into the race and likes getting her toe in the ground. If its wet, she will likely shorten.
Selections: 1-2-7-6
Suggested Bet: I Am Good At This Each Way
Race 2 – 1000M Toyota Forklifts (Bm78)
Exploring is the straight bat option here and I am sticking with her. Loves the 1000 metre mark (2/3 in her career) and has some form behind some really strong sprinters, or should I say in front of, as she has beaten Archo Nacho, who I think wouldn’t have gone amiss in some of the G1 sprints in the Springtime. You go back this time last year and he was running around with the best 2YO’s before finishing 10th in the Golden Slipper. If she brings her best, she wins.
Tintookie is older and wiser than the favourite and has more runs on the board, which could prove dividends late in the race. She rarely ever runs a bad race and has never missed the placings when fresh. You can expect a very honest, tough effort from her, watch for her to fly late.
Tristate works best over the 1100M mark, but he certainly possesses a lot of speed, enough to beat this field if he really puts his foot down. However, he needs to improve a whole lot to be winning.
Our Kobison is the X Factor here and the market are making sure they don’t take a major hit if he manages to get up. Lightly raced and looks to have plenty of fuel under the hood. His recent trials have impressed and he is ready to make the jump to Saturday grade.
Selections: 5-6-1-8
Suggested Bet: Exploring Win
Race 3 – 1100M Midway (Bm72)
Prince Invincible is a horse I have a lot of time for and I am very adamant that he should have won way more than 3 races in his career. He will jump on the bunny, roll forward, sit amongst the leading pack and try and be one of the strongest late. Sara Ryan is in an everything she touches turns to gold run at the moment, so you know this horse will be ready to win.
London will likely find himself parked right behind that speed and should be stalking them everywhere they go. He does his best work on rain effected tracks and has an in form jockey on his back. All signs point to a strong showing.
Lady Shenanigans should find himself towards the front as well. She was able to defeat Prince Invincible last time out which is good form to go off. Gets a weight claim and will carry 6kg less than the favourite. Figures as a great each way chance.
Hellova Nature is another one who is lightly raced and has a stack of potential. Keep very safe, as he is well placed here and will be the one to watch late.
Selections: 4-6-10-8
Suggested Bet: Prince Invincible Win
Race 4 – 1300M Bisley Workwear (Bm78)
Terra Mater is short, but I can’t really see any other horse in the race beating her. She has been a star for the stable, being bought for a measly $1700 and has since gone on to never miss a trifecta in 10 career starts. Nash is 2/2 so far on her and he should be going 3/3 here.
Rocketeer Girl, Euros and African Daisy will be the ones to challenge and make her work for it, but I would be shocked to see anyone get past the short favourite.
Selections: 1-5-8-3
Suggested Bet: Terra Mater Win
Race 5 – 1500M Precise Air (Bm78)
Money From The Sky will do me at each way odds. I mentioned trainer Sara Ryan’s run of form as late earlier, which has me confident in this horse’s chances. He will get to the back, but if he can stay within striking distance going around the bend he can run them down. Best work is done in the wet as well, which puts him in good stead.
Vegas Outlaw could be very much a copy and paste job. Sara Ryan trained, in good form, great form actually, winning 4 straight. The only key difference, is this horse will be right up on the pace and if he manages to cross from the wide barrier, he might get a clean lead and if he does, watch out.
Running By is the short favourite and is obviously quite dangerous and should be respected. 6 starts and has barely put a foot wrong. This camp never bring one of their Melbourne based horses up to Sydney if they aren’t confident, so she could definitely win this one and strongly.
Cadetship gets the all important JMac and Waller combo here which will put her in good stead. Untried at this distance, but certainly looks like he is ready for it.
Selections: 3-1-5-9
Suggested Bet: Money From The Sky Each Way
Race 6 – 1600M James Squire (Bm72)
I’m leaning the way of Eau De Vie and I will hope to god that it is dry. She isn’t bad on wet by any means, but she much prefers it to be dry and if it is, she is way overs. She has seen dry tacks twice this prep and is 2/2 on them and can easily be 3/3 here. She’ll be right up on the speed and be in the perfect position for a stalking run, if Collett keeps her from over racing, she should finish very strongly.
Bullit is the opposite. He’ll get back in the run and hope and pray that it is wet, as he is more of a swimming type, as his 1/10 record on dry suggests. JMac and Waller combo is a plus and has won multiple races this prep. Is he looking for the paddock? Time will tell, but a win here could be the cherry on top of a 4 month long prep.
Vomo Island and Ambassadors are the map horses here and if the track is really favouring he leaders on the day then these two are the ones you will want to be on. They will push forward and potentially get in a speed battle for the lead, without a tonne of pressure as well. If they let them have their way, these two could battle neck and neck all the way down the straight.
Selections: 3-2-9-10
Suggested Bet: Eau De Vie Each Way
Race 7 – 1400M Egroup Protective Services (Bm88)
Hellsing for me. International imports always intrigue me and this one has caught my eye for the Neasham stable. Was full of promise in Europe going 5:2-2-0, one of those outings was in Stakes class as well and he only went down by half a length. A recent trial win indicates he has a decent enough engine to warrant his opening price and they have booked JMac, which displays confidence. If he doesn’t get caught in traffic, this is the horse to watch late.
Danaustar might have to work to get to the front, but if minimal petrol gets burnt in the effort, he will be one of the key threats. Loves getting his own way in front and has made a habit of being really gutsy to the line and only just getting beat when he does. Just beaten by Robusto last time out, who he will have to turn the tables on, but he does manage to get a slight weight swing in his favour on the consistent Waller gelding.
Cool Jakey is the favourite and you can see why. He has been running really well at the midweeks, running them into the ground with pure pace. Deserves his jump to Saturday grade, but he can win without my money, I need to see if he can hack it with the big boys first.
Selections: 4-6-5-9
Suggested Bet: Hellsing Win
Race 8 – 1200M Tab (Bm88)
Legio Ten will do me. Was very quick home to win last start despite being about 8 lengths back on the turn, very impressive in my eyes. Is versatile in all conditions, usually runs strongly second up and is down in the weights. Only negative is that Nash has jumped off. I still think this horse can win and win strongly if it is kept within striking distance.
Conscript shouldn’t be $51, plain and simple. Has his runs this prep been pretty poor? Yes. But have they been at the right distance for him? His last start certainly wasn’t, so I like the drop back to 1200 where he has had plenty of success before. Should roll forward and be dangerous late if he brings his best.
With Your Blessing was hard done by to lose last time out. Led, kicked, looked home and was then nabbed very very late and the photo sealed his fate. Would probably be hoping the tracker is softer than dry, but I think he will be dangerous no matter the conditions.
Dalaalaat won last time out by nabbing Contemporary late. Those who remember, Contemporary came out and won in impressive fashion in his subsequent start, so the form has been franked, which has me scratching my head why he is a $19 pop here.
Time To Boogie is a deserved fave, but he is unlikely to gain a start, if he does, I wouldn’t be against putting some late money on.
Selections: 13-1-4-5
Suggested Bet: Legio Ten Win
Race 9 – 2000M Climate Roofing (Bm78)
Roma Avenue will need to jump cleanly if he has any hope of crossing and not getting caught wide on that tricky 2000m start that Randwick has and if he does, he s right in this one. As I have said before in this article Sara Ryan is flying (I think I have said it 3, count em, 3 times, but come on, she’s flying), so this horse will be ready to win. Winning is something he has become used to this prep as he has won his last two on the trot after jumping up in distance both times. If he gets out to the 2km mark, then I think he will be hard done by not to be in the finish.
Kettle Hill is in tip top shape at the moment and is coming off a nice win at The Valley when he managed to sneak through and get the victory by the narrowest of margins. He comes back to the Sydney way of going about thing where he hasn’t had tonnes of success. But now he has found a win, his best can certainly continue it.
Monfelicity is a genuine stalwart in races like this. She is always there but never breaking any glass ceilings. Very much so a horse that always threatens to go on a tear through the grades and just ends up running into excuses. I very much so believe that it’s because this is her ceiling. Very capable of getting a win here and should be respected.
Kapakiri took a while to break the maiden but he hasn’t looked back since. Has won 3 on the bounce and is looking for 4 here. Leading jockey on board and should get a cushy run in transit.
Selections: 7-2-11-8
Suggested Bet: Roma Avenue Each Way
Race 10 – 1100M Ranvet (Bm72)
Shaken looks to be the good thing of the day based on her excellent win last time out at Warwick Farm. She smashed them with ease on a bottomless deck on a Wednesday in what was a super impressive outing. Before that she had 2 faultless trials to get ready for it and now gets to have a crack at Saturday grade. She looks well placed, should have enough speed to get around drawing the widest ally and get the job done.
Boston Rocks, Miss Emma and Amnesty will all possess some danger about them, especially Boston Rocks and Amnesty as they’ll roll forward and try and pressure the favourite, whereas Miss Emma will hope they go too fast up front and she can slingshot right past them.
Selections: 7-3-12-2
Suggested Bet: Shaken Win (BEST BET)
