We get back into the AFL betting action this week as we lead into the finals where every Tom, Dick & Harry want to bet on the footy. If someone does ask – point them this way if you like them. If You don’t, maybe just refer them to Sportsbets’ popular multi-section. There are some big games this weekend with big finals ramifications but as always, we will be trying to pinpoint areas where the market is wrong which in turn is leading us to basically analyse every game. Let’s get into it!

COLLINGWOOD VS GEELONG – FRIDAY 7.50PM – MCG

AFL.com

There doesn’t seem to be any value in the H2H markets or line markets in this game. I think the bookmakers have got this one right (Cats will probably start a touch shorter) but there is some prop bets that have caught my attention.

JOSH DAICOS 25+ DISPOSALS – $1.70

Without his brother or Steele Sidebottom in the side you would expect him to be the main outlet man for the likes of Mitchell and De Goey to give it too and he does have a good record against the Cats. His last three games against Geelong have seen him gather 29, 27, and 21 disposals and those Geelong wingers are another year older and a touch slower so if it does become a free flowing contest, he will do them for speed and undoubtedly cover the ground better than they will. He’ll have a good night!

JORDAN DE GOEY 25+ DISPOSALS – $2

The Cats have struggled against other teams’ inside midfielders in recent weeks considering the injuries to Guthrie and Blicavs and this guy is the Magpies’ best inside and clearance midfielder and I expect him to get plenty of ball both in the contest and explode away from the contest. He has had just an even last six weeks and I expect him to start firing on the run to the finals. He could be the match winner.

GARY ROHAN 2+ GOALS – $2.80/3+ GOALS – $7

Ah the enigma that is Gary Rohan. As much as we love to get into him, he is important to what the Cats do forward of fifty and he has been terrific against the Magpies in recent years recording three and two goals against them the last two times they have met. With Nathan Murphy under an injury cloud and Isaac Quaynor likely going to Ollie Henry, it might free up Rohan and allow him to hit the scoreboard. We are getting decent odds to find out!

ESSENDON VS NORTH MELBOURNE – SATURDAY 1.45PM – MARVEL STADIUM

Source: AFL.com

Yet again, I can’t see much value in this game from a H2H or line betting market. I could have the Kangaroos a touch shorter considering they were only beaten by 6 points the last time they played but Essendon still have finals to play for and will want to bounce back after a poor game last week. I have found just the one prop bet I do like though.

ZACH MERRETT 30+ DISPOSALS – $1.75

Zach Merrett loves playing against the Kangaroos, recording 34 and 39 disposals the last two times the teams have met. North Melbourne struggle against inside midfielders and I think he and Darcy Parish should rack them up against an inexperienced North Melbourne midfield.

SYDNEY VS GOLD COAST – SATURDAY 1.45PM – SCG

AFL.com

I think the TOTAL GAME POINTS UNDERS (+165.5) seems like a good bet here. Both teams’ defensive systems have held up okay over the last month and neither team scores overly heavily either. Happy to take the Unders as they would have to buck the trend to go over it. I like a few prop bets here.

MATT ROWELL 20+ DISPOSALS – $1.95/25+ DISPOSALS – $4.80

The young Gold Coast Bull was tremendous the last time these two teams met in round one when recording 28 disposals and nine clearances and it would not surprise me if he did that again here. The Swans are still the worst clearance team in the competition and Rowell still averages close to eight clearances a game. I think you can pretty much bank ten disposals just from clearances in this game and he only needs to find another 10-15 disposals around the ground which he is very capable of doing.

NOAH ANDERSON 30+ DISPOSALS – $2.80

This is the same logic that I used for the Rowell bet. Sydney give up disposals to inside midfielders like Willy Wonka gives out chocolate bars and Anderson is the highest disposal-getting inside midfielder at the Suns. I think he and Rowell will find plenty of the ball and give the Suns a fair chance of winning the game by winning the territory battle for the Suns.

NICK BLAKEY 20+ DISPOSALS – $1.70/25+ DISPOSALS – $3.90

Gold Coast can struggle handling these running/intercept defenders purely because they don’t have the speed or willingness to chase and pressure at times and Blakey has made the most of that over the last two meetings recording 20 and 25 disposals. If he is allowed the license to run and carry, I think he can have a big game and drag the Swans across the line.

BRISBANE VS ADELAIDE – SATURDAY 4.35PM – GABBA

Source: AFl.com

I am happy to back BRISBANE AT THE LINE (-21.5) here. The Crows got the better of them earlier in the season but inaccuracy did cost the Lions when they kicked 10.18 and the Gabba is an absolute fortress for the Lions. They should be beating the Crows by at least four goals on Saturday. I like a couple of prop bets here too.

JOSH DUNKLEY/LACHIE NEALE 30+ DISPOSALS – $2.90 & $2.35 RESPECTIVELY

I think the reason why the Lions will win is due to the dominance they will have in the midfield battle and that will be led by these two who are both superstars of the competition. The Adelaide midfield ranks as one of the worst in the competition for clearances and contested ball and that is the area of the game these two thrive on. I thought they both should have been in the red in this market. They will be the match winners for the Lions.

MELBOURNE VS CARLTON – SATURDAY 7.25PM – MCG

Source: AFL.com

I think the obvious bet here is the TOTAL POINTS UNDER (+167.5) – $1.88 market. These two teams haven’t gone anywhere near that mark in their last two contests and I would argue their defences are probably stronger than ever considering both teams are in brilliant form. I like a couple of prop bets.

ANGUS BRAYSHAW 25+ DISPOSALS – $1.70/30+ DISPOSALS – $3.30

Brayshaw has been very good this season and has a terrific record as of late against Carlton. He has recorded 24 and 39 disposals in his last two encounters with the Blues and Carlton do struggle to contain those running half back and winger types which is what he is. He has hit the 25 disposal mark in four of his last five games and I think he will again here.

MAX GAWN 20+ DISPOSALS – $1.80

Big Max has been in brilliant touch since Brodie Grundy has been dropped and I think he finds a pretty weak ruck partnership to go up against in Marc Pittonet and Tom DeKoning. He only got the seventeen disposals last week but they were horrible conditions for ruckmen down in Tasmania and in his three weeks prior to that he recorded 28, 13, and 29 disposals. He will be the Blues’ main concern all night.

WEST COAST VS FREMANTLE – SATURDAY 8.10PM – OPTUS STADIUM

Source: AFL.com

I think if you are betting on this game all you can do is lose. The first thought was to look at the inside midfielders for both teams but then I saw Tim Kelly at $1.40 for 25 disposals and Caleb Serong at $1.19. West Coast have been playing a touch better so I think the line is about right as well. Leaving this one alone.

HAWTHORN VS WESTERN BULLDOGS – SUNDAY 1.10PM – UTAS STADIUM

Source: AFL.com

There is no value betting opportunities in the H2H or line markets in this contest. I did entertain the idea of the unders in the total points market but I also think the key forwards from both teams could play well. I like a few prop bets.

MITCH LEWIS 3+ GOALS – $1.90

All he has to do is kick straight to be hitting this mark. In their earlier contest this season he had just returned from injury and kicked 1.4 and he kicked 4.2 against this team last year. He is an incredibly good player and I think their defence will struggle to contain him.

AARON NAUGHTON 3+ GOALS – $2.40

I think Sicily will go to Ugle-Hagan which allows Naughton to get a favourable match up on whoever he plays against. He has recorded 4.3, 3.3, and 3.1 in his last three games against the Hawks and I can’t see that changing on Sunday. He will simply be too big and too athletic for whoever plays on him.

CALEB DANIEL 25+ DISPOSALS – $2.20

The Hawks give up disposals to half back and wingers and that is why Daniel should be hitting the 25 disposal mark here. The Dogs like to get the ball in his hands and I expect them to win the inside battle which should allow him to get some cheapies on the way to 25 disposals.

ST KILDA VS RICHMOND – SUNDAY 3.20PM – MARVEL STADIUM

Source: AFL.com

The Tigers just don’t win at Marvel and that’s why I think the SAINTS H2H – $1.80 is a good bet. Last year when these teams met at Marvel the Saints beat the Tigers by 33 points for the Tigers to win the return fixture at their favoured MCG. I would argue that the Saints are better now and the Tigers want the season to be over. I like a few prop bets in this one.

BRAD CROUCH 30+ DISPOSALS – $2.10

The Tigers, outside of Tim Taranto and at times Shai Bolton, are horrid at containing opposition inside midfielders. The last two times these teams have met Crouch has had 33 and 29 disposals and I can’t see that changing in this game. With Jack Steele carrying an injury Crouch has stepped up to be the main man in that midfielders and the Tigers don’t tag. He’ll find plenty of the footy.

MARCUS WINDHAGER 20+ DISPOSALS – $1.95/25+ DISPOSALD – $4.80

With the likes of Clark and Billings out for the Saints, Windhager has had more midfield minutes and has taken the opportunity well. He has gone over 25 in two of his last four matches and I don’t think the Saints will be too conscious of the Tigers midfield which will allow him to go and hunt his own footy and if he does that, I can see him having a pretty big game.

JAYDEN SHORT 25+ DISPOSALS – $1.95

Short consistently hits around this number and he plays well against the Saints who historically struggle against half backs. In his last two games against the Saints, he has recorded 23 and 31 disposals and I think the ball will be in the Tigers defensive fifty enough for Short to find plenty of the ball. The Tigers love it in his hands, especially at Marvel.

SAM BANKS 15+ DISPOSALS – $1.70

Being a Tigers man I am pretty keen on this young man’s future and I think he can find plenty of the football on Sunday. He is very much like a young Jayden Short in terms of being a brilliant and long kick and as I said previously, the Saints struggle against those types in regard to containing their influence. He won’t really have a direct opponent and that should allow him to find the ball.

PORT ADELAIDE VS GWS – SUNDAY 4.40PM – ADELAIDE OVAL

Source: AFL.com

With rumours of sickness sweeping through the Power this week, I think GWS AT THE LINE (+15.5) – $1.90 seems like a good bet. I love the way Adam Kingsley has this group playing and I think without Charlie Dixon the avenues to goal for the Power dry up and without Trent McKenzie (assumedly) the Toby Greene match-up shapes as a very dangerous one. I like a few prop bets.

DAN HOUSTON 25+ DISPOSALS – $2

I thought this might be the best value of the round. The Giants have allowed half backs to do what they like all year and Houston essentially plays like one and is a model of consistency hitting this mark in three of his last four games. The ball will be in neutral territory a fair bit in this game and that suits him. Should be hitting this mark.

KANE FARRELL 20+ DISPOSALS – $3.50

Bit more speculative this one but it is based off the idea that the Giants give up easy ball to small running defenders and that Port love it in his hands. He has hit this mark in two of his last five games but he does play better at home and outside of Greene the Port small defenders won’t have any major concerns which should allow him to try and attack.

HARRY HIMMELBERG 25+ DISPOSALS – $3

I thought he would be closer to red figures than black ones but here we are. Sam Taylor and Jack Buckley will take the two key forwards in Todd Marshall and Jeremy Finlayson which will allow him to be the main intercept defender all day. He had 26 a fortnight ago and in that game he took 12 marks and I can see him doing something similar again here.

So, those are my bets for this weekend? What are your best bets?

As the AFL season draws closer, the best time to find value in the markets for the awards season is now. In this article, we will be suggesting the best value selections for the Brownlow Medal, Coleman Medal, Rising Star Award, and the Premiership winner!

BROWNLOW MEDAL:

JOSH KELLY – $67

Source: The Age

The departures of both Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper throughout the off-season open up plenty of midfield opportunities at the Giants and in the case of Josh Kelly, he will be the undisputed number-one midfielder at the club. They already try and get him the ball as much as possible because he uses it so well and I can only see that being enhanced in 2023. Kelly’s highest count stands at 21 votes and over the course of that season he averaged 29 disposals a game and kicked nineteen goals. He averaged 26 last season and for the reasons stated above, it isn’t difficult to see him reach thirty a game this season. He has polled at least ten votes in five of the past six seasons and I think he will shorten dramatically throughout the course of the season as I have the Giants improving in 2023.

CONNOR ROZEE – $41

Source: AFL Ratings

The pick number five of the 2018 AFL draft had a career-best season last year when averaging twenty-three disposals a game and kicking eighteen goals. His last two months of football in 2022 were terrific and that amounted to him polling the majority of his fourteen Brownlow votes in that time period. With the likes of Travis Boak only getting older and with the retirement of Robbie Gray, the Power will need to rely on their younger players to stand up and I think at the age of 23, Rozee will add some more consistency to his game which could see him post upwards of 20 votes which will have in the frame to take Charlie home.

NOAH ANDERSON – $101

Source: The Age

Anderson is profiling as a young player who will be at the top of the count for many years to come. He polled eight votes in 2021 when only averaging twenty-two disposals a game and that increased to fourteen votes when he averaged twenty-six disposals last season. Admittedly, it might be hard for him due to teammate Touk Miller’s great polling record, but with Miller coming into the season under an injury cloud and the Suns having three winnable games in the first six weeks of football, he could start very well and be a good opportunity to lay off on Betfair to guarantee a profit!

COLEMAN MEDAL:

AARON NAUGHTON – $26

Source: Western Bulldogs.com.au

This is the futures bet I am very keen on going into 2023. The Bulldogs superstar kicked a career-high fifty-one goals last season and played under an injury cloud for large chunks of the season. In 2021 he kicked forty-seven goals and forty behinds which had him on a very similar level of scoring shots to the likes of Tom Hawkins and Harry McKay. He has had an injury-free pre-season (touch wood), he is entering the prime of his career at around twenty-three and I think the Bulldogs will go close enough to finish top four this season which should allow him to kick the extra ten or fifteen goals he needs to win the Coleman. Tom Hawkins and Tom Lynch are also carrying injuries heading into the season (in particular Hawkins) and they should both be closer to $15. $26 seems a crazy price.

TODD MARSHALL – $41

Source: Fox Sports

I think with Robbie Gray retiring and Charlie Dixon entering the twilight of his career it will be Marshall’s forward line now and he was very good last year without many plaudits when kicking forty-five goals. The important part for me is that when Port Adelaide won in 2022, Marshall kicked twenty-eight goals from their ten wins. I think the Power will win more than ten games this season and Marshall has already shown the capability of kicking big bags of goals (for modern football) kicking 4+ goals on five occasions last season. He should be shorter in this market.

NICK LARKEY – $41

Source: Fox Sports

I think the appointment of Alistair Clarkson as the head coach will do wonders for Larkey who has been consistently good for the last couple of seasons, kicking forty-two goals in 2021 and thirty-eight in 2022. It was obviously very hard for a key forward in the North Melbourne set-up last season with them only winning two games and getting beaten by ten-plus goals on plenty of occasions. I think North Melbourne will be more competitive in 2023 which should allow him to have more opportunities to kick goals. He will be twenty-five halfway through the season and should be reaching the peak of his career which could open up the chance for him to kick beat his personal best by 15 – 20 goals which would have him go very close to winning the Coleman.

RISING STAR AWARD:

SAM DARCY – $9

Source: Fox Sports

The shortest of odds that I have put up here is this bet but I think he has a very good chance and I am not completely sold on the fact that Will Ashcroft will have a dominant first year. I think the draft class of 2022 was a weak one and Darcy spent a year in the VFL before coming in and plying his trade admirably at the pointy part of the season in the last four games. He averaged just under a goal a game in that month and averaged six marks a game and if he repeats that over the course of a season (with some slight improvement) I think twenty-five goals and six marks a game will see him winning the Rising Star Award. He will have some memorable moments/games which always helps in these awards!

JAI CULLEY – $17

Source: AFL.com

As I said earlier I think the draft class of 2022 will not set the world on fire in their first seasons which leaves me with Culley who was a mid-season draft selection who played four of the last six games of the season for the Eagles and averaged thirteen disposals a game and a whopping 7.5 tackles. He also averaged close to four clearances a game in that patch and I think with a proper AFL pre-season under his belt he can only improve dramatically into his second season. He has a ready-made body and he will be noticed in a poor Eagles team based on the fact he is hard at it and wins clearances. $17 is a reasonable price.

PREMIERSHIP WINNER:

WESTERN BULLDOGS – $15

Source: AFL.com

The value in this market lies with the Bulldogs who have the talent and coach to win a premiership. The 2021 Grand Finalists scraped into the finals in 2022 after a disastrous start to the season which saw them start 2-4 after six weeks. They did well to regroup from that position and still play finals and I think when you look at the talent at their disposal, especially across both the midfield and forward line, they should be finishing top four which will give them a very good chance at winning a premiership. Any team with the likes of Bontempelli, Macrae, Liberatore, Treloar, Naughton, Weightman, Daniel, Dale, English, and Smith in their best 22 simply must be expected to measure up in the premiership race. This does not account for the chances of marked improvement from the likes of Sam Darcy, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, and Ed Richards – the previous two being top-three draft picks. If they start the season well, they have an easy run home and will be at $6 at some stage during the season.

Do you agree with my selections? Disagree completely? Let me know in the comments, I would love to discuss it!

The Best Jersey Ever Worn By Each Afl Team

By Mitchell Cashmore

Resident Mock founder Cashy takes you through the best-ever strip/guernsey/jumper/jersey that has ever been worn by every current AFL team in the competition. As he says “In Sports, a jersey can make or break a team’s identity. An ugly jersey can make a sporting club look silly, unintimidating and unprofessional. But a genuinely good-looking jersey can both capture the attention of fans everywhere and bring in plenty of money from merchandise sales. After all, in most sports, clubs are all run like a business and their uniform is a key part of their branding and the AFL is no different.”

So from the GWS Never Surrender look to the Collingwood Swooping Magpie there have been plenty of good lookers. But which ones are the best? Read for yourself today!

Top 10 NBA players under the age of 25

By Josh Gatt

The NBA currently has a new generation of talent coming in. Soon LeBron, AD, Kyrie, Durant and Curry will all be retired and the likes of Zion, Tatum, Luka and Trae will be the marquee names of a golden generation. There are tonnes of talented players in the NBA that still have their entire careers ahead of them, so it was difficult to narrow them down to a top 10, but Josh manages to put together a pretty solid list.

This is a MUST-read for any NBA fan!

10 Best Fictional Sports teams of all time

By Mitchell Cashmore

Imagine a world where all of your favourite sports movies were a reality and the teams that compete in them were actually real. Well, that is exactly the reality that Cashy came up with when designing this list.

He pretends that these teams are actually real entities and bases the rankings on their success as such. So it is no reflection of how good the movie was, although a slight bias might have crept into a couple of picks purely because of his soft spot for the movie, but hey, it is for fun after all.

AUTUMN CARNIVAL PREVIEW: WHAT ARE THE BLOCKBUSTER RACES OF 2023?

Source: Herald Sun

By Billy Glanvill

Regular TMS Dot Com Dot Au contributor Billy Glanvill takes us through the can’t-miss races of the 2023 Autumn Carnival. This year promises to be an exciting carnival with all the spring stars returning and many questions to not be asked and answered. Will Nature Strip return to his best and claim his 4th TJ Smith Stakes or will the baton be passed on? Will Anamoe continue his dominance over middle-distance racing and then go on to conquer overseas challengers?

And will the star horses return from injury, like Incentivise and Think it Over return to their dominant best?

All these questions and more will be answered in what is set to be a blockbuster 3-month carnival and despite it being difficult to pinpoint exactly which horses will run where we are going to take a look at four races that are simply must-see TV throughout the upcoming carnival.

I am an avid lover of sports films and I have decided to go through and rank the Top 10 greatest fictional sports teams of all time. And yes, I will be pretending that these teams are actually real entities and I am basing the rankings on their success as such. So it is no reflection of how good the movie was, although a slight bias might have crept into a couple of picks purely because I have a soft spot for the movie, but hey, it is my list and you can blast me in the comments for it if you disagree. Welcome to the new home for The Mock Sports! For those of you who are new here, here is our story so far:

The Mock Sports is a podcast and sports media brand that revolves around Horse Racing and Sports and we aim to produce the best content possible for the common sports fan, with plenty of punting tips on the side!

In 2020, in the middle of a COVID lockdown with nothing to do founders Nick Hyland and Mitchell Cashmore both turned 18 and discovered the art that is punting. Like many others, we spent our first few months blindly throwing our money on everything in sight. However, eventually, we started to research, learn and get half decent at tipping horses to our mates. So, despite not having nearly enough knowledge to do so, we decided to jokingly start a podcast, just to get on Spotify and The Mock Racing Club was born.

Just over a year later, we rebranded to The Mock Sports so we could also focus on our passion for sports such as AFL, Cricket and NRL.

With our premiere show ‘The Quaddie Poddy’ we tip the entire Sydney Horse Racing card each week of the Autumn and Spring Carnivals and we are proud to say we have gone from having a handful of people listening each week to hundreds and sitting down and recording it with one of your best mates has become the highlight of our weeks.

With our community growing bigger, better and stronger every week, we decided to expand. In comes, a website, new content, new shows on the podcast channel and a strong focus on community engagement ensuring that we are not only producing the strongest content possible but also being as profitable as possible with our tips.

We want this website to be a platform where any passionate sports fan can come and share their opinion. We want to build the biggest community of like-minded punters and sports enthusiasts sharing their thoughts on the games they love and maybe even a few cheeky punting tips along the way. So whether you’re interested in Sports Media, studying it, pursuing it or already working in it OR just passionate about your field and want to voice your thoughts – we want you! Get in touch with us at [email protected] to contribute to the site!

So welcome to the community, we hope that we can help you proudly claim to be a Mock!
